Marcel Breuer's S41 chest of drawers (1924/27) is a study in simple, rhythmic design. He stacked six drawers, alternating them in contrasting black and white. The black handles either blend in or stand out, creating a visual rhythm that concludes with a black glass top. A functional "attica" with raised edges on the top prevents pens from rolling off, adding a useful detail to the elegant design.

DESIGNER
Marcel Breuer
Marcel Breuer (1902-1981) is a Bauhaus master known for his use of tubular steel and the cantilever chair, which freed people from rigid seating. This invention was a symbol of its time, but Breuer's true goal was to research the essence of objects, asking, "What should a modern piece of furniture do today?"
