Philippe Starck
Philippe Starck helped transform Emeco from a military supplier into a top design brand. In 1999, after Starck used the Navy chair in the Paramount Hotel, he met Gregg Buchbinder, Emeco's new owner. Surprised to learn the company wasn't "owned by a bunch of old army guys," Starck proposed designing a chair for them, starting a long and fruitful collaboration.
ABOUT THE BRAND
Emeco, or The Electric Machine and Equipment Company, is an American furniture brand established in 1944. Originally, it supplied furniture to the U.S. Navy, creating the legendary 1006 "Navy Chair" from recycled aluminum. This chair became an enduring classic. The brand's philosophy centers on sustainability and minimalism, using recycled and reclaimed materials like aluminum and PET plastic. Emeco has collaborated with renowned designers such as Philippe Starck, Jasper Morrison, and Konstantin Grcic, blending modern design with its core values of strength, simplicity, and sustainability.
