DESIGNER
Walter Gropius
Walter Gropius (1883-1969), the architect and founder of the Bauhaus, derided traditional architecture as "salon art." He came from a family of builders and, after abandoning his studies, joined the office of Peter Behrens. Gropius, along with colleagues like Mies van der Rohe and Le Corbusier, soon founded modernism, a movement that marked a major break from past architectural conventions.
